Non-Food Related Self Care

Quarantine, presidential elections, reform, and COVID-19…This can be a very stressful time for many of us. We need self care more than ever to help us push through this era and continue being strong individuals.

So, what do you do for self care? Do you find quiet time to yourself, pick up old hobbies, or maybe eat your favorite foods? Take a minute and just reflect on what your go-to thing to do is after a stressful day. Not that there is anything wrong with satisfying those taste buds every once in a while, but it is important to remember that you can practice self care with non-food related activities. I often see many individuals immediately turn to food for comfort, especially during emotional/mental turmoil, which may very well be the cause of their future stress and worries. And especially in the society we live in now, it becomes second nature for us to start this nearly unbreakable habit.

I just want to remind you that food is not your only option. You probably know that already, but perhaps you haven’t given it a second thought yet. Whether it is enjoying a nature walk, reconnecting with friends/family, dancing, reading a book, or rekindling your drawing/painting skills from junior high, there is always something else that you may have forgotten brings you joy. Make the time for yourself to enhance your wellbeing. We work so much of our lifetime away and sometimes lose sight of what makes us happy. Don’t forget what used to put a smile on your face :)
