Homemade Cheddar Biscuits in less than 30 minutes
For years I did not even attempt to make my own biscuits from scratch because I always thought they were as hard as making croissants (croissants take HOURS to make). But in less than 30 minutes, you can become the star baker of the party :D So if you’re like me, hopefully this is convincing enough to finally try making them on your own this holiday season. Impress your friends and family with these beautiful, buttery, flaky, puffy pieces of joy!
Servings 11 biscuits
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 12 minutes
Ingredients
2 cups cake flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons cold butter
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, combine cake flour baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter (sometimes I use a fork) until the butter pieces are the size of peas.
Add the buttermilk and cheese and mix with a wooden spoon until the dough forms.
Lightly flour your hands and tabletop/board to transfer the dough. Pat the dough into 1/2 inch thickness. Fold the dough in half and flatten to 1/2 inch thickness again and again and again. I like to do this process about 5 times. All the folding creates those flaky layers.
After flattening the dough for one final time, use a floured biscuit cutter (I use a metal 1/3 cup measuring cup to improvise) and cut the biscuits to be placed on the baking sheet.
Make sure the biscuits are placed right next to each other in a circle or square formation so that they can rise rather than flatten while cooking. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
Enjoy!
