Adelante Classic Meet Recap

Captured by @coreyscontent

Wow! I can’t believe it’s already been 4 months since the last updates with you all. Time truly flies no matter what is happening in our lives. As things have calmed down with school and the meet, I can finally fill you guys in on how my last meet went and everything leading up to it.

First and foremost, competing is such a buildup of excitement, pride, and passion. We train for months, stay consistent in and out of the gym, and become tediously patient all for just 9 minutes on a platform to determine how all the hard work paid off. At least this is how competing feels for me. I have been working with my coach Carl Gocon since December 2021 and he has done nothing but prepare me in the best way for this meet. My numbers have sky rocketed in just several months and I felt stronger than ever. If you are thinking about powerlifting programming/coaching, I highly recommend working with the Resurgence Team.

The training leading up to the meet could not have run smoother. Simultaneously, when I was about a month out I focused on making sure I hit 8 hours of sleep each night and cut down my nutrition gradually with increased walks to make my weight cut. I will go into much more detail about making weight without tracking calories in my next post so stay tuned for that!

The day of the meet, I actually cut down so perfectly that I weighed in at 59.9 kg to make the 60 kg weight class. Not to toot my own horn, but this goes to show that nutritional guidance and expertise on what to do in a reasonable way can put you at an advantage for meeting a goal without drastic measures like water cutting or huge losses in strength. The only downfall to my cut was that my waist was much smaller because I was the leanest I have ever been, making my belt way too loose. I actually ended up having to use a random belt I have never trained with before to create more tightness for bracing. This sort of backfired and on my third squat attempt, the skinniness of the belt I wasn’t used to may have caused me to pitch forward and misgroove the attempt. It was a weight I have pretty much done before 1 week out (282 lb) but the slip up caught me off guard. I am happy to say I have since gotten a smaller belt that is like my old one so I am super prepared for the next meet/weight cut.

When bench came, I was so in the zone and totally forgot about the commands on the first attempt! How embarrassing! I 100% am almost always that lifter that has commands to a tee and even my coach was stunned. But nevertheless, I did not question my strength for a second. I felt great! Some pretty risky jumps were taken but landed me with a strong third attempt I was very happy with.

Deadlifts are known to be my bread and butter. When it came to deads, I felt pretty solid all the way through. The fatigue of comp day always has me more tired than a fresh training day at the gym of course. So although I was extremely happy for a meet PR on the third attempt, I have to admit that I was surprised I wasn’t completely red lighted for hitching. If anyone saw the videos or attempt in person, I believe there was very slight downward motion because my nails got caught on my thighs and caused some very awkward wiggling. Although, sometimes we are just gifted with some white lights and in my case I was very appreciative of that. However, I am working harder than ever to make sure the next meet will not be based on gifts but rather solid security of a lift with great technique.

At the end of the day, I totaled 782 lb:

Squat: 265 lb (second attempt)

Bench: 154 lb (third attempt - meet PR)

Deadlift: 363 lb (third attempt - meet PR)

I could not have asked for a better coach, friends/teammates, and support from family all through prep that got me to where I am today. The next meet I am COMING for the national qualifying total and will be even more ready than ever before!
